LinkedIn Alternatives for Freelancers: Network, Portfolio, or Career Record?
Before replacing LinkedIn, decide whether you need reach, proof of work, or a CV your own agent can maintain. Those are different jobs.

“Alternative” hides three different needs
When an independent professional asks for a LinkedIn alternative, they may mean one of three things: a place to be discovered, a place to show selected work, or a reliable CV link to send when an intermediary asks for the latest version.
No single product has to do all three.
| Network | Portfolio | Career Record | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary job | Discovery and relationships | Show selected work | Maintain professional facts |
| Typical audience | Recruiters and peers | Clients and collaborators | Clients, intermediaries, agents |
| What changes often | Activity and connections | Cases and artifacts | Roles, projects, outcomes |
| Best source of truth | The network itself | Curated project pages | Owner-approved structured data |
person.work chooses the third job
person.work does not try to manufacture network effects. There is no feed, ranking, recruiter inbox, or engagement loop. The initial user already has an audience and an existing CV. Their frustration is maintaining that CV across documents and conversations.
The intended workflow is simple: connect an MCP-capable agent, import the existing CV once, review the structured result, and then describe future changes in conversation. The agent proposes a diff. The owner approves it. Web, PDF, and portable data continue to agree.
What ownership can honestly mean
A hosted profile is still hosted by someone else. person.work should not claim that a URL under its domain is the same as owning the infrastructure.
The practical control comes from narrower guarantees:
- the owner decides what is public;
- an agent cannot publish its own proposals;
- profile data is not sold or used to build an advertising feed;
- the record is exportable in an open, machine-readable format;
- changing agents does not require starting from a PDF again.
person.work is a non-commercial goodwill project. That does not remove every hosting dependency, but it makes the incentives and exit path clearer.
The decision for a freelancer
If your problem is “nobody can find me,” you need distribution. If your problem is “my work deserves a visual case study,” build a portfolio. If your problem is “every agent and document tells a slightly different version of my career,” maintain a Career Record.
The useful stack may include all three. The important choice is which one carries the facts.
